Montgomery County police on Wednesday identified the 12-year-old girl found dead inside a Gaithersburg townhouse Tuesday night, saying she had suffered trauma to her upper body.

The victim, Jessica Nguyen, was a student at Gaithersburg Middle School, according to a law enforcement source and online records showing that she was an honor roll student there. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police received a call for a pediatric injury in the 700 block of Raven Avenue. Officers arrived to find Jessica dead inside the home she shared with her extended family, according to neighbors and police sources.

Police were interviewing family members, friends and neighbors, Officer Rebecca Innocenti, a county police spokeswoman, said earlier Wednesday.

The townhouse sits in a large, new development off Girard Street, about one mile north of the Gaithersburg city hall. Neighbors described the family as friendly and quiet.

Lynn Rundhaugen remembers trying to chop ice winter with a plastic snow shovel. A man who lived in the townhouse appeared with a metal shovel. “This will work better,” he said, handing it to her, according to Rundhaugen.

“We are talking with multiple family members. …. We are not narrowing our scope in any way,” Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman said late Tuesday.

Anyone with information was urged to contact Montgomery police at 240-773-5070.
