Deer runs through library window, is euthanized

A deer ran through the front window of a Southwest Washington library Tuesday afternoon. No one was injured except for the deer, which was euthanized, authorities said.

The incident happened shortly before 1 p.m. at the Washington Highlands library in the 4000 block of South Capital St SW. Library spokesman George Williams said the library was not open to the public, and no patrons were inside.

After the buck ran through the glass, library staff called 911 and the D.C. Library Police.

Williams said the library window was made of safety glass, which breaks into small pieces instead of shards. Williams said the deer broke its jaw and animal control euthanized the deer.

The library where the incident happened is an interim library being used until construction on the new Bellevue neighborhood library around the corner in the 100 block of Atlantic St SW is complete.
