Denver man, 66, found dead in Petworth alley

A homicide victim found Tuesday in Northwest Washington alley has been identified by police as a 66-year-old Denver man who had been visiting the city for about two weeks.

Gary Dederichs, who investigators think had worked in Colorado as a nurse and was possibly retired, was found dead shortly after 6 p.m. in an alley in 800 block of Emerson Street NW in the Petworth area.

Police said he had been staying with a resident of the neighborhood.

Dederichs had suffered a blow to the head, police said. An autopsy concluded the manner of death was homicide.

The killing remains under investigation by D.C. homicide detectives.
