District Heights police shoot suspect in his back

A District Heights police officer shot a man Thursday who was arrested and accused of trying to steal a motorcycle.

Police said the officer shot the suspect, Kalvin Kyle (cq), at around 5:20 p.m. in the back to prevent his escape. Kyle was transferred to a local hospital. Deputy Chief Wendell Brantley said late Thursday night that Kyle’s condition was unknown.

The officer was identified as Sgt. Johnnie Riley, who has served for eight years. He has been placed on leave as the Prince George’s Police Department investigates the shooting.
