Doctor in botched abortion case due in court

A Utah doctor facing a murder charge related to a botched second-trimester abortion is due in a Maryland court.

Dr. Nicola Riley was extradited to Maryland on Thursday, and her lawyer says she has an initial appearance and bail review scheduled for Friday morning in Elkton.

Maryland authorities charged the 46-year-old physician last month with first-degree and second-degree felony murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

The charges come from an August 2010 procedure that left an 18-year-old woman with a ruptured uterus and injured bowel.

Prosecutors say Riley drove the woman to the hospital rather than call 911.

Riley has not yet entered a plea, although her defense attorneys have said nothing illegal occurred.
