A St. Mary’s County man suspected of a domestic assault was killed Thursday after a violent struggle with a police officer, officials reported.

Kotrell Omar Newsome, 38, of Spinnaker Circle in Lexington Park was shot by a sheriff’s deputy shortly after 3:19 p.m., according to police.

Deputies had been called to the townhouse for a reported domestic assault, police said. Deputy Robert Gill went to the home, determining that Newsome had assaulted his wife, according to police; during the course of the investigation, Newsome allegedly again became “aggressive towards the officer and his own family.”

Gill, a six-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, attempted to arrest Newsome, according to police, but Newsome resisted.

A Taser did not subdue Newsome, police said, and after a struggle Gill drew his gun, shooting Newsome. Newsome died on the scene, investigators said.

Gill has been placed on routine administrative leave during the investigation. The domestic assault and the shooting are both under investigation
