D. C. Superior Court Judge Russell F. Canan sentenced Donnell Washington, 28, after a jury this summer found him guilty of the July 9, 2010 shooting of Stanley Dawson, 19, and two of his friends.

Prosecutors say Washington was angry that five days earlier, Dawson took a gun away from Washington’s best friend who was firing shots in the air on the Fourth of July, at a time when children were outside playing.

According to prosecutors, Washington hunted Dawson for days before finding his victim and three of his friends, all unarmed, in the Parkland neighborhood playground. They say Washington began shooting into the group, killing Dawson and injuring two of his friends.

The judge also placed Washington on five years of supervised probation following his release from prison.
