A Beltsville woman who was driving drunk when she struck and killed two men who had stopped after a fender bender was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years in prison.

Jenny Mate, 32, plowed into Roy Lacayo, of the District, and Justo Rosario Jr., of Hyattsville the night of Feb. 1, 2010 on Riggs Road in the Adelphi area. Mate didn’t hit the brakes immediately before or after the crash, police testified.

Prince George’s Circuit Court Judge Cathy H. Serrette noted that Mate had two previous convictions for driving under the influence, and was behind the wheel even though her license was suspended.

“You had repeated wake-up calls that you’ve ignored,” Serrette said to Mate.

Lacayo, a father of five who worked as a manager at Jiffy Lube, had been at a pool hall that night. Rosario, a computer repairman, had been out with his teenage brother on a job. The two stopped to exhange insurance information after a fender bender.

Mate, a single mother who is pregnant with her second child, apologized in court and said she was addicted to alcohol. A family member said one relative will raise Mate’s 5-year-old child, and another plans to raise her baby when it is born.
