Va. driver in fatal head-on collision charged with reckless driving

The man behind the wheel of a dump truck that collided head-on with another vehicle on Lee Highway in Manassas on Tuesday, killing the other driver, has been charged with reckless driving, police said Thursday.

James Edward Dibble, 65, of 7858 Eagle Ave, Alexandria, was driving southbound on Lee Highway near Sudley Road about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday when he crossed into the northbound lane and struck the rear panel of another truck, which was carrying four people, police said.

According to investigators, Dibble subsequently swerved back and forth, from the northbound to the southbound lanes and back into the northbound lanes.

Driving against traffic, Dibble’s dump truck collided with an SUV head-on.

The driver of the SUV, 40-year-old Daniel S. Tulk of South Riding, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No one else was in the SUV.

The 40-year-old Aldie woman who was driving the truck whose rear panel was hit sustained a minor injury.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

Dibble is charged with reckless driving, police said. He is being held without bond and a court date has been set for Feb. 2, 2012.
