A driver died in a fiery crash Sunday morning in Calvert County when his car hit a tree and burst into flames, the county sheriff’s department said.
The crash occurred about 7:44 a.m. on northbound MD Route 4 at Chaney Road in Dunkirk, authorities said.
According to investigators, the driver was traveling north when the car veered off the road and entered a grassy shoulder. The car continued north, crossing Chaney Road and smashing into a tree.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, the car was engulfed in flames.
The driver was the car’s sole occupant. Authorities have been unable to make a positive identification of the body and said they will release more information once the driver’s identity is confirmed.
It is unclear whether the driver died of injuries from the crash or the ensuing fire. An autopsy will be performed at the chief medical examiner’s office in Baltimore, authorities said.
Investigators believe the driver may have been speeding before the crash occurred.
The county’s crash reconstruction team is continuing the investigation of the crash. Anyone with additional information can call 410-535-2800 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
