The driver of a tanker truck carrying 9,000 gallons of fuel in Fairfax County was killed overnight after his vehicle overturned and burst into flames.

The fiery crash happened about 2:15 a.m. as the driver attempted to merge from Route 286 (Fairfax County Parkway) onto I-95 North. The truck overturned on the ramp, Virginia State Police said.

When first responders arrived on the scene, the truck was fully engulfed in flames, police said. It took nearly 3 hours before troopers and firefighters were able to safely approach the vehicle.

The driver, who was not identified, was found dead inside the truck. Police are still in the process of notifying the driver’s next of kin.

Investigators are at the scene of the crash, which is expected to tie up traffic throughout the morning commute. The far right lane of I-95 North is closed, but the three other lanes and HOV lanes remain open.

Exit 166B, which is the entrance ramp to Route 296 North, is closed. The ramp from Route 286 South to Route 1 is also closed.
