Fatal car crash in Prince William County

A Manassas woman was killed on I-66 West this morning while apparently trying to turn left across the HOV lane into an emergency crossover spot, according to Virginia State Police.

Police identified the woman as 89-year-old Cecilia Eck. She was driving a Chevrolet Lumina in the center lane at about 9:45 just west of Exit 47 for Route 234, police said, and had apparently slowed to turn into the cross-over spot. She was then struck by a Ford Ranger pick-up.

“The westbound vehicle could not stop to avoid her and struck the vehicle on the driver’s side,” said Corinne N. Geller, a Virginia State Police spokeswoman.

Eck died at the scene. The male driver and female passenger in the Ford, both teenagers, were transported to Prince William Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to police.

While the crash remains under investigation, police don’t expect to file any charges.
