Fatal crash causes major delays on Beltway

One person was killed and a second was injured Monday morning in an accident on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway in Maryland.

According to police, the crash took place in Silver Spring about 2 a.m. and involved multiple cars and a tractor trailer.

Investigators shut down all lanes of I-495 between Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue for several hours.

Lanes began reopening shortly after 6 a.m., but Dr. Gridlock’s Mark Berman reports that heavy delays persist from Colesville Road to before New Hampshire Avenue.

One person, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead.

A second person was taken to a local hospital, but police did not have details about the victim’s injuries or condition.
