Firefighter injured in ‘freak’ wind-fueled fireball to be discharged from hospital

The firefighter who suffered severe burns to half his body while battling a house fire in February will finally be discharged from the hospital today, Prince George’s County fire officials announced.

Bladensburg firefighter Kevin O’Toole has been recovering at the Washington Hospital Center’s burn unit for nearly two months.

The 22-year-old sustained second- and third-degree burns on Feb. 24 while fighting a blaze in Riverdale Heights that injured six other firefighters.

At the time, fire officials described the basement fire that erupted into a wind-fueled fireball “a freak occurrence.”

O’Toole is expected to be discharged from the hospital sometime between 1 and 2 p.m. Officials said he would make a statement to the media and public at that time.
