A man was shot and killed in the Fort Washington area early Wednesday morning, and homicide detectives are probing whether the slaying might have been drug-related, according to authorities and law enforcement sources.

The incident occurred just before 1 a.m. in the 1100 block of Palmer Road, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George's County police spokesman. He said officers were called to the area for a reported shooting, and arrived to find a man, later identified as Marcellus Jermaine Jackson, 33, of Greenbelt, inside a vehicle that was on fire.

The vehicle, Johnson said, appeared to have rolled onto some leaves after the shooting, and detectives were probing whether it might have accidentally caught on fire because of that.

“They were looking at a possibility of that happening, but it’s really still being investigated,” Johnson said.

Authorities pulled Jackson from the vehicle and extinguished the blaze, but Jackson was pronounced dead on the scene, police said. Johnson said Jackson was suffering from gunshot wounds.

Online court records show Jackson has a history of convictions for drug and other crimes. Law enforcement sources said detectives were still searching for suspects in the case, though it was possible the crime was drug-related, given Jackson’s criminal history.
