A 20-year-old District man pleaded guilty in the slaying of a man he believed was having a sexual relationship with his girlfriend, authorities announced Wednesday.
Jerome E. Bailey pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed in the shooting death of Rico Matthews, 36, last year. Bailey believed the woman he was seeing at the time was also involved in a relationship with Matthews. According to prosecutors, Bailey repeatedly confronted the woman, who denied the accusations.
On Nov. 5, 2010, Bailey and Matthews got into what was described as a heated argument inside a home in the 4000 block of First Street SE. Bailey shot Matthews four times with a .380-caliber semiautomatic pistol. Matthews died from his injuries.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, Bailey faces 16 to 20 years in prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 18.
