Several people are being treated for smoke inhalation after a house fire early Thursday in the Shepherd Park neighborhood of Northwest Washington, fire officials said.

The fire began after 6 a.m. in the 1300 block of Locust Road NW, about two blocks from the D.C.-Maryland border. Fire officials said they believe the fire started on the second floor of a three-story residence.

The occupants were brought out of the home by firefighters and are being treated for smoke inhalation, officials said.

The majority of the fire had been put out by 7 a.m., but Locust Road remained closed to traffic as of 8 a.m.The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
