The husband of a Falls Church council member has been arrested on charges including aggravated sexual battery after two females reported he had “inappropriate contact” with them at his home.

Michael A. Gardner, 47, was arrested Wednesday and also was charged one count of object sexual penetration in connection with incidents that were alleged to have occurred at his home in Falls Church last weekend, police said.

Gardner’s wife, Robin S. Gardner, is a current city council member and former city mayor, according to one police official with knowledge of the case. Susan Fuller, a city spokeswoman, would not confirm the relationship.

Michael Gardner previously served as chairman of the Falls Church City Democratic Committee.

Falls Church police said after they were contacted by the two females they obtained search warrants for DNA evidence.

Gardner is being held in Arlington County Jail.

Robin S. Gardner served as the city’s mayor from 2006 to 2010.
