Lightning strikes 5 homes in Anne Arundel

Five houses were struck by lightning Monday afternoon in Anne Arundel County, authorities said.

The strikes occurred in the southern part of the county, in the Davidsonville, West River and Edgewater areas, said Lt. Frank Fennell of the county fire department.

Two strikes caused fires, and one of the fires, in the 100 block of Edgewater Drive, caused more than $250,000 in damage, Fennell said.

The other fire was at a farmhouse in the 400 block of Owensville Road, and caused about $25,000 in damage, he said.

No injuries were reported.

The main effects of the three other strikes were on electrical equipment, Fennell said.

The lightning came during one of a series of thunderstorms that cooled temperatures in the Washington area.
