Man, 23, shot dead playing basketball at New Carrollton elementary school

A 23-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday night while playing basketball at an elementary school in New Carrollton, police said.

Alusine Kargbo, of Lanham, was playing basketball with five or six other people at Carrollton Elementary School on Quintana Street when someone came up and fired a gun at the group just before 9 p.m., said New Carrollton Police Chief David G. Rice.

Kargbo’s friends drove him to nearby Doctors Community Hospital and authorities transported him to MedStar Trauma Center, Rice said. He was eventually pronounced dead just after 11 p.m., police said.

Rice said the suspect remains at large, and it is unclear what provoked the shooting. He said those playing basketball told officers they did not know the shooter.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George’s Police Department’s homicide unit at (301) 772-4925.
