A 73-year-old man has been charged with fatally shooting his live-in girlfriend Thursday night in Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police.

Joseph Chandler of Northeast was charged with second degree murder while armed, according to Officer Araz Alali, a police spokesman.

Police identified the victim as Shirley Renee Tucker, 63. The spokesman said Chandler was arrested inside the apartment where the shooting occurred, in the 1800 block of Maryland Ave.

Alali said officers were called to the apartment about 8:15 p.m. to investigate an altercation. He did not say who called police. When officers arrived, Alali said they found the victim suffering from several gunshot wounds to her body.

She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police also did not say what the couple was arguing about.
