Man arrested in relative’s summer beating death

A District man has been charged in the beating death of a relative in Northeast, police said on Friday.

Arvel Wills, 23, of Northwest, was taken into custody on an arrest warrant charging him with second-degree murder, authorities said in a statement. His arraignment in D.C. Superior Court has not yet been scheduled.

Wills is charged with killing Dwayne Wills, 25, who police said was beaten to death at Abbey Place and L Street NE, about five blocks southeast of the NOMA-Gallaudet Metro stop and about three blocks from his home.

Police said the beating occurred May 26. Dwayne Wills was taken to a hospital in a private car and admitted with a head injury, police said. He died June 4. His death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma.

Police said the men are related, but did not have more specific information Friday morning.
