Man charged with DWI after driving into D.C. canal

A stretch of Canal Road in Northwest Washington was closed Tuesday morning as police fished a car out of the canal.

According to police, a man drove off the road in the area of Foxhall and Canal roads NW about 9 p.m. Monday night. The man claimed he saw a bear, authorities said.

There was no sign of a bear, and the driver was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, authorities said.

Canal Road was closed between Foxhall and Arizona Avenue to remove the car, which was completely underwater.

U.S. Park Police worked with D.C. police to get the car out.

The roadway was reopened shortly after noon.
