Woman fatally shot by officer in Culpeper

A 54-year-old woman was fatally shot by a Culpeper police officer Thursday morning, authorities said.

The officer responded to the 300 block of North East Street in Culpeper about 10 a.m. after a report of a suspicious person in a parking lot, according to a town news release.

After a “physical altercation,” the officer shot Patricia A. Cook, of Culpeper, according to the Virginia State Police. She died at the scene.

Authorities did not say how many shots were fired, and they did not name the officer. The officer is a five-year veteran, authorities said, and was placed on administrative leave during the investigation of the incident.

This item has been updated to correct Cook’s age.
