Man killed after Md. fire ID’d

Prince George's County police have identified the man killed after he set his own home on fire during a standoff with officers as 39-year-old Edward Carl Martin.

A woman who said she was trying to end her relationship with Martin called police to the home in the 10000 block of Behun Drive in the Cheltenham area just after 5 p.m. Sunday, police said.

She said she was afraid because Martin had fired his gun in the basement as she escaped the residence, police said.

Police arrived and initiated a barricade. Martin later set several small fires in the basement, police and fire officials said. Firefighters waited for police to tell them it was safe to enter the home; by the time they extinguished the blaze, authorities have said, the residence was gutted and Martin was dead inside.
