Man killed in D.C. police shooting identified

Police identified the man fatally shot by a District police officer following a standoff Tuesday as 55-year-old D.C. resident Jean E. Louis.

Louis, who lived in the 1600 block of Irving Street in Northwest, was shot after he lunged at a police officer with a sharpened object at his apartment, police said.

Officers were attempting to take him into custody after he stabbed another officer and barricaded himself inside his home, according to police.

Police had initially come to Louis’s apartment to take him into custody because he was being committed to a mental-health facility, police said. The man allegedly had a history of mental-health issues.
