A promoter for a popular D.C. area go-go band was shot and killed inside a Forestville area apartment early Wednesday morning during a shootout with someone inside the residence, authorities said.

The victim was identified as 23-year-old Deandre Yates.

The incident occurred about 2 a.m. inside an apartment in the 6100 block of Surrey Square Lane, authorities said. Police said an assailant forced his or her way into the apartment, then got into a struggle with the man inside — a promoter for the TCB go-go band. The two exchanged gunshots, police said, and the promoter was killed.

The assailant fled the scene and remains at large, and homicide detectives are still trying to determine what motivated the shooting, authorities said. In the past, police have complained of violence that occurred at or after TCB shows at D.C. area night clubs, though it remains unclear if Wednesday's shooting had any connection to the band itself.

The shooting remains under investigation.
