Man killed in shootout with Fairfax County police

Fairfax County police fatally shot a man who opened fire on officers Sunday night in Mount Vernon, authorities said.

Two officers approached two men who appeared to be acting suspiciously around 11:20 p.m. near the intersection of Frye Road and Madge Road, police said.

One of the men fled and both officers chased the man, police said. An altercation ensued and the man pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said.

The shots missed the officers, but one officer returned fire and struck the man, who was pronounced dead at Mount Vernon Hospital, police said. Police on Monday evening identified
the man as Nicholas Allen Kaelber, 21.

Police declined to release any additional details about the shooting.
