Man sentenced in home invasion that killed handyman

An Oxon Hill man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday for killing a handyman who defended a family during an invasion of a Centreville mansion in May 2010, authorities said.

Reynard Lazaro Prather, 22, pleaded guilty to charges of armed robbery and murder in February for his role in a conspiracy to rob the home of the owner of a check-cashing business. Prather and two other men believed that the owner kept the proceeds in his home.

Armed with semiautomatic weapons, Prather and a partner entered the home’s garage May 17, 2010. When the owner’s son and an employee, Jose Cardona, arrived, Prather and his partner confronted the two.

During a struggle, one of the two men shot Cardona.
