Man shot in back in Northeast in critical condition

A man who was shot several times early Thursday in Northeast Washington remains in critical condition at an area hospital, according to police.

The shooting occurred about 12:10 a.m. in the 1700 block of Benning Road NE, just east of the intersection of Benning Road, H Street, Bladensburg Road and Maryland Avenue.

Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman, said the adult male victim was shot multiple times, including in the back, from at least seven gunshots that were fired on the street.

Police had no description of the attacker. Officers at the scene reported on the department’s Twitter account that the victim was slipping in and out of consciousness; Alali said he was still alive as of 8 a.m. on Thursday.
