Man shot near Gallery Place Metro Station Monday morning, police say

A man was accidentally shot in the leg early Monday morning during scuffle that started inside a fast-food restaurant at the Verizon Center, according to District police.

The fight broke out about 5:30 a.m. inside a McDonald’s in the 600 block of F St. NW, police said, and may have spilled out onto the street. A police spokeswoman said one of the men had a gun and that he accidentally shot himself in the leg.

Police said the victim was taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment; his injuries were not expected to be life-threatening. Police initially said the other man was arrested in the case, but later said the man who shot himself was charged with assault with a deadly weapon after being released from a hospital.

Police also said officers recovered the gun.

Although the shooting occurred before the area near the Gallery Place/ Chinatown Metro station swelled with morning commuters, police had F Street blocked until about 8 a.m.
