Police have identified the man shot and killed near a playground in the Hillcrest Heights area Thursday as 23-year-old Adrian J. Perry, authorities said Friday.

Homicide detectives are still searching for a suspect and motive in the case, but a law enforcement source said investigators believe Perry, of Upper Marlboro, was targeted specifically. He was shot about 3:30 p.m. in the 4700 block of 23rd Parkway and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital a short time later, authorities said.

Witnesses said Perry was shot in between two apartment buildings in the complex, and he stumbled toward the playground before collapsing. They said a group of children on the playground scattered after hearing what sounded like three or four shots.

Efforts to reach Perry’s family members were not immediately successful.
