A man was struck by a train and seriously injured during the evening rush in the Friendship Heights station on Metro’s Red Line, authorities said.

The man, who was reported to be conscious, was extricated from beneath the treain and taken to a hospital, according to D.C. fire and emergency medical services spokesman Pete Piringer.

It was not clear what led to the man’s presence on the track.

Trains were sharing a single track around the site of the incident and thousands of commuters were experiencing delays in both directions.
