A man who authorities say shot a woman in the face before opening fire on a man he suspected of murder was found guilty in the woman’s killing Thursday, authorities said.

In a news release, the U.S. attorney’s office said a D.C. Superior Court jury found Cedrick Shuler, 36, guilty of second-degree murder while armed in the Feb. 22, 1998, killing of Renee LaShawn Best in the 4600 block of Hillside Road SE.

Authorities said Shuler shot Best in the face before shooting Walter Jones, whom he suspected in the killing of Hosea Stringfield earlier that day, in the legs. Jones was later charged in that killing and is awaiting trial.

Best was an innocent bystander, according to authorities. She crawled to her home, where she died, authorities said.

Shuler faces murder charges in two other killings in early 1999 and is scheduled to stand trial in those in May.

Shuler faces a maximum sentence of life in prison in the killing of Best. He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 14.
