An Alexandria man faces charges following a crash in Franconia that killed a passenger in his car, police said Thursday. The man was allegedly driving under the influence.

Joseph Shuttleworth, 21, faces a single count of involuntary manslaughter after the death of Alexandria resident Adrian Cardozo, according to Fairfax County police.

On February 15, Shuttleworth was driving his car at high speeds on Franconia Road, police said. The vehicle ran off the road on a turn and struck a utility pole, ejecting Shuttleworth and Cardozo. The accident occurred near Guilford Drive around 2:10 a.m.

Cardozo, 21, and Shuttleworth were taken to a hospital, where Cardozo later died.
