March against proposed youth detention center planned

BALTIMORE — Protesters plan to march in Baltimore against a proposed youth detention center.

The march is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Baltimore City Detention Center and end at the National Academy Foundation High School.

The protesters are calling for more investment in schools, housing, vocational and recreational centers, and youth jobs programs as well as an end to funding for the proposed jail for youths charged as adults. Organizers say the march is one of a number of events being held nationwide in observance of National Youth Justice Awareness Month.

A report issued last year that was critical of state proposal. The National Council on Crime and Delinquency found forecasts of youth population and arrests were done in 2007 and did not account for changes since then.
