Maryland state trooper crashes into SUV

A Maryland state trooper hit a 64-year-old woman’s SUV in Upper Marlboro on Saturday, and state police are investigating the crash.

Trooper Darwin Bennett, 24, was driving north on Route 301 in his police cruiser and, at the intersection of Queen Anne Bridge Road, struck a 2005 GMC Envoy. Sheila Watson Hopkins, who was driving the Envoy across Route 301, was flown by helicopter to Prince George’s County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Bennett was taken to the Bowie Health Center with minor injuries.

The investigating officer, Cpl. Charles Harvey, suspects that one of the drivers ran a red light, but he has not yet concluded his investigation.
