McLean woman, Beverly Sargent, struck and killed by car

An 81-year-old McLean woman was struck and killed by a car Tuesday in what Fairfax County police are calling an “unfortunate accident.”

Beverly Sargent, of the 1800 block of Kirby Road, was in her car in her driveway getting ready to head to a local service station around 11 a.m. Tuesday, police said. She had arranged for another driver to bring her home.

Sargent got out of her vehicle and walked to the rear of the car to see if the other driver was behind her, police said. The other driver, an 86-year-old man, attempted to put his car into gear and it began rolling forward.

The man was unable to stop his Toyota Camry before it struck Sargent, police said.

Sargent was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after 3 p.m., police said.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash and police said charges will not be placed in the case.
