Mechanicsville man dies in crash

A Mechanicsville man died in a Tuesday afternoon crash in Leonardtown, authorities said.

Emergency responders arrived at Maypole Road near Point Lookout Road about 4:10 p.m. to find a Ford Explorer with the engine compartment on fire, according to the St. Mary’s County sheriff’s office.

The Explorer was heading north on Maypole Road before it left the roadway, hit a tree, spun around and hit another tree, authorities said. The driver, David J. Quade, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 52-year-old male passenger was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Investigators believe speed and alcohol contributed to the crash, authorities said. Anyone with information is asked to call Cpl. Doug Mills at 301-863-4816.
