A basketball and track coach at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville was arrested Thursday and accused of having sex with a 16-year-old girl who had been his student and whom he coached in track, Montgomery County Police said.
Spear had been the student’s track coach since 2009 and also had been her teacher at Julius West. Police said that during the years Spear had been her coach, the two were “in constant contact”by cell phone during and after school and on the weekends.
Spear has taught since 1993 in Montgomery County Public Schools, said schools spokesman Dana Tofig. Tofig said Spear has been placed on administrative leave.
Parents of students on the track and basketball teams will receive individual calls notifying them about the arrest, and a recorded phone message and online newsletter will be available for the broader set of Julius West parents, Tofig said.
The arrest stems from incidents in April or May of 2011, when Spear contacted the student and asked if she wanted to meet, said police. Police said she agreed, and Spear took her to a Rockville residence where they engaged in sexual intercourse. They returned to the residence again for sex on the following night, police said.
In May or June, the girl confided to another person that she had had sex with an older man, and in November identified the man as Spear to the same person, according to the police account.
Police received a report on Jan. 27 about the alleged incidents from an “unnamed complainant” who contacted the department’s Family Crimes Division.
Information about Spear’s bond status was not immediately available.
