Mt. Vernon woman dies in weekend crash in Kingstowne

A Mt. Vernon resident died Sunday afternoon after being injured in a car crash in Kingstowne, Fairfax County police say.

Diana Merediz, 71, died at the scene of the accident at the intersection of Kingstowne Boulevard and Kingstowne Village Parkway.

Merediz was riding in a car driven by a 77-year-old man going southbound on Kingstowne Boulevard in a 1994 Toyota Camry. When the man attempted to turn left onto Kingstowne Village Parkway, a 25-year-old man driving a 2011 Ford Mustang on the northbound side of Kingstowne Boulevard struck the Camry on the passenger side. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital — the 77-year-old with life-threatening injuries, the 25-year-old with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are still investigating this case as of Tuesday morning.
