Neighbors set up fund for Burke family, Cherubins, who lost much in fire

Neighbors and friends of a family who lost many of their possessions in a fire in Fairfax County have set up a fund to help their neighbors.

It’s not their first act of goodwill — Fairfax fire officials credit neighbors with helping ensure that the Cherubin family of the 9900 block of Manet Road made it out of the house when a fire engulfed the garage and back of the house Nov. 21.

The fire is under investigation, said Fairfax fire spokesman Dan Schmidt.

Checks can be sent to Burke & Herbert Bank, 9516 Old Keene Mill Rd., Burke, VA 22015. The bank asks that donors put “Help Manet Road” and account number 211008906 on checks. Donors can call the bank at 703-684-1655 and ask for the branch manager if they have questions.

Denis Garrelts, a neighbor helping with the effort, said that Michael and Sheila Cherubin are receiving some help from local churches as well. Questions can also be sent to neighbors at

“It’s very much appreciated,” Garrelts said.
