New headquarters for Alexandria police

The Alexandria Police Department dedicated a new $81 million headquarters building, its fourth home, Wednesday after years of slowly outgrowing its space.

The new headquarters, at 3600 Wheeler Avenue, is a 124,000 square foot four-story building that will house 441 police employees and 55 workers from the Department of Emergency Communications.

The third floor is a combined police and fire emergency communications center. An adjacent secure parking garage can hold 500 vehicles.

Alexandria’s first police headquarters was located on North Fairfax Street in what is now City Hall.  In 1959, the department moved to 400 North Pitt Street, and in 1987 relocated to the Public Safety Center on Mill Road.
