One man was shot and five were stabbed early Sunday morning in a large brawl at the recently opened Red Rock Cafe at the Festival Shopping Center near Gaithersburg, police said.
Montgomery County and Gaithersburg city police are investigating the melee, which erupted after a fight began between two women inside the nightclub and later involved several men. More than 100 people who had attended a widely advertised Rapper Karaoke Night joined in the fighting after it moved to an outside parking lot, police said.
The initial reason for the incident remains under investigation, Montgomery police spokeswoman Lucille Baur said.
One adult male from the District was shot and taken to a local hospital with wounds that were said to be non-life-threatening. Five other men suffered non-life-threatening stab wounds and were taken to area hospitals for treatment. One woman was cut and took herself to a local hospital, Baur said. Another man was punched with a blunt object but did not require hospitalization, Baur said. Others who suffered minor injuries refused treatment.
Baur said many witnesses and participants at the scene refused to cooperate with police, hampering their investigation.
