Pedestrian killed in Fort Washington when vehicle hops curb

A man on a sidewalk was struck by a vehicle and killed Tuesday morning in Fort Washington after the vehicle’s driver fell asleep at the wheel, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 6:30 a.m. in the 9200 block of Livingston Road, authorities said. Police said the driver of a green Subaru fell asleep while driving along Livingston Road, and his vehicle hopped a curb, went on to the sidewalk and struck a man there.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Police have identified the man as 46-year-old Terraine Saunders, of Fort Washington.

Police said the driver of the Subaru stayed on the scene and cooperated with investigators. Investigators, they said, do not believe he was speeding or using drugs or alcohol. Police said they are still probing whether to file criminal charges.
