Police: DNA hit leads to suspect in Alexandria burglary

An Alexandria man has been been charged in connection with the burglary of an 82-year-old woman’s home after tests matched his DNA with that found at the scene, Fairfax County police said.

Bernell Gripper, 45, of the 8100 block of Pine Lake Court, was charged with abduction, robbery, burglary and disabling a telephone line to prevent help, police said. He was arrested at his home on Wednesday.

The burglary occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Feb. 19 in the 8000 block of Russell Road in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, police said.

The woman was sitting in her bed watching TV when her her bedroom window was smashed out, police said. When the woman went to the window to investigate, she was surprised by a man crawling inside, police said.

The man grabbed the woman, forced her into another room and demanded money, police said. Once he had the money, he disabled the woman’s home telephone and took her cell phone and car keys, police said.

The man then fled in her 1989 gray Pontiac Firebird, which was later recovered, police said.
