Police have identified the man who shot and killed a woman before turning the gun on himself in a domestic dispute in Laurel Wednesday as 38-year-old Javan Terrance Abney, of the District, authorities said.

Abney was found fatally wounded behind a nursing home in the 9100 block of Cherry Lane just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said. Detectives believe he shot and killed himself just minutes after he shot and killed a woman with whom he had a relationship, authorities said.

Police had identified the woman Wednesday as 26-year-old Brandice Jones. She was shot and killed in front of her 10-year-old son in the 14700 block of Buckingham Court — very near where she lived, authorities said.

The 10-year-old was not hurt, authorities said.

Police said that they were still probing Jones’s relationship with her attacker, but they believed the incident stemmed from some type of domestic dispute.
