Police investigate possible drowning in Leesburg drainage pond

Police, divers and volunteers in Loudoun County are expected to continue their search Monday morning for a possible drowning victim in a drainage pond.

The investigation began late Sunday morning, about 11:40 a.m., after a caller reported seeing a man in a drainage pond in northeast Leesburg, west of the Leesburg Bypass and south of Battlefield Parkway, authorities said.

The witness called 911. While on the phone with the dispatcher, the caller said that the man’s cries for help had stopped and that he could no longer see the man in the pond.

Police said there were several witnesses who saw a man in the pond. When officers arrived on the scene, however, they didn’t find anyone in the pond or the general area; there was no evidence indicating that someone had been near the pond.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team assisted with the investigation, which continued until about 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.

The possible victim has only been described as an adult man. According to police, there have been no missing person reports since the time of the incident.

Anyone with information can call 703-771-4500.
