Three men in a white van abducted a woman from a Merrifield street on Monday night, assaulted her, and then pushed her out of the vehicle after she fought back, Fairfax County police said.

The 26-year-old was walking along Arlington Boulevard near Gallows Road around 11 p.m. Monday when the van pulled up next to her, police said. A man forced her into the vehicle and it took off eastbound on Arlington Boulevard, police said.

The men assaulted the woman and police said she tried to escape. As she fought her assailants, the men pushed her out of the van near the intersection of Fairfax Boulevard and Chain Bridge Road, about five miles from where she was abducted. A police spokeswoman did not know if the van was moving at the time.

Police said the woman suffered injuries to her upper and lower body. The next day she sought medical attention and reported the abduction to police.

“At this point, we are treating it like a stranger attack, but we are still filling in the details of the investigation,” said Officer Tawny Wright, a Fairfax County police spokeswoman.

Police are also trying to locate a man who stopped to help the woman between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on Monday night. The woman used the man’s cell phone to call a friend. Police said the man was driving a dark green car.
