Authorities said the man approached a woman on July 7 about 1 a.m. near M and 31 Streets NW and offered to help her find her friends. Police said he led to the canal off 31st Street “and pushed the victim down into the bushes.”
The victim was able to get away from her attacker, according to police. They described him as white and in his 20s, standing about 5 feet 9 inches tall and slightly overweight. He spoke with a heavy Australian accent, had a scruffy beard and was wearing shorts and a polo shirt with white and blue horizontal stripes..
Police said this case is not linked to the sexual assault of another woman on July 26 along the Capitol Crescent Trail near Fletcher’s Boat House. In that case, police said the attacker came up behind the victim and choked her until she was unconscious before sexually assaulting her.
Police have not made an arrest in that case.
